TV resolution is about 525 x 400, however, you don't see all of that. There's other info, like closed captioning, so the visible is around 480. That's for composite NTSC analog video.
The FCC adopted the ATSC's digital TV standards in 1996. There's 18, which make up SDTV and HDTV. A DVD is basically super definition TV.
DTV resolutions range from 640x480 to 1920x1080, with various frames per second, and either progressive or interlaced. The difference between progressive and interlaced is the latter updates only half the frame every 1/60th of a second. So regular analog interlaced TV is 30 full-frames a second. Compare a (progressive) monitor to a (interlaced)TV. Cross them, and get flicker.
With DTV, there's also a change of aspect ratio, which is basically the wide-screen in a theater. Makes viewing the video more immersive and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. That's why DVDs and movies are formatted to fit the whole screen, else they are letter-boxed (with black bars on bottom/top).
To give you an idea how big uncompressed HDTV signal is, it needs a bitrate about 1GB. MPEG2 drops that about 40 times to about 20 megabits/sec. A regular TV signal is 6 mhz, so they can fit an HDTV signal in that, or cut it up to have multiple SDTV signals in it.
That's the amazing thing about digital and analog, regular TV channels take up the same bandwidth as an HDTV signal.
On a regular TV, a DVD will look better than an analog signal, but only so much. The true value will come in viewing it on a digital TV. And by 2006, all TV operators will have to broadcast digital signals, so you will have to buy a DTV or a set top box to convert the signal to analog viewing.

Om du har spelat in en film på din hårddisk och vill visa den på din TV vilken upplösning bör du då ha på filmen för att få bästa möjliga kvalitet?
Det optimala måste väl vara att filmen är i samma upplösning som skärmen som den ska visas på?
