A little over a month ago, Charter [ISP] told customers in four markets that a company called NebuAd would be installing monitoring boxes on its network in order to watch where they surfed and what they searched on in order to deliver targeted advertising.
NebuAd pays the ISP to be able to eavesdrop on customers' surfing in order to build profiles that can be used to serve targeted advertising on third-party websites.
Just last week, two public interest groups released a technical report showing that NebuAd actively manipulates data flowing from websites to user's browsers by adding its own JavaScript that pretends to be from a site such as Google. That script redirects users browsers to get cookies and report information to other companies' ad networks.
A similiar venture in the U.K. called Phorm came under intense scrutiny after British Telecom was busted conducting a secret test of the eavesdropping technology on more than 10,000 of its customers.

Att google gör något liknande i en applikation man frivilligt installerat är ju inte på långa vägar samma sak. Här pratar vi om att internetleverantören kartlägger surfningen per default. (googles kartläggning är också förkastlig imo)

Although their research is quite interesting there are a few things which limit its practicality. They can only detect tunnels going through ssh servers which they control. This is because their detection mechanism can only handle a single authentication type whereas an ssh server can (and usually does) allow multiple (e.g. public-key or password). This requires admins of the server to limit the allowed authentication options to a single consistent choice. They also require the ssh server _and_ client to disable compression. Their technique will also falsely classify a second login attempt (after a failed login) as a tunnel and drop the connection.
