Internetradio - snart historia?

När jag jobbade på en radiostation så satt jag och kollegorna ofta på fredag och lördagkvällar och lyssnade till en station i New York.

Blev apförbannad när dom slutade upp med detta på grund av att dom inte hade råd med "STIM-pengarna".

De flesta bara flyttar sin "sändare" till Kanada så är det frid o fröjd.

Vore det så enkelt skulle det väl inte vara ett sånt väldans liv, eller?

Jag är inte så insatt i det, men det jag läst /. och andra "nörd" sidor så är det inte något större problem...

Jag körde själv på liknade sätt, jag skickade min ljudström till en server vilken "sände" min radio vidare till mina slutanvändare.. och på det sättet sparade jag min egen bandbredd så fler kunde lyssna. om man sätter upp liknade "proxy" servrar i .ca så är problemet löst.. visserligen produceras matrealet i usa men det sänds från .ca, Det är även så Tv3 osv. gör för att få sända reklam till barn då de sänder från England.. :l

Förstår inte varför just internetradio ska få en sådan höjning på avgifter, när vanlig- och satellitradio ligger kvar på samma nivåer som tidigare.

I tisdags var det ju "A day of silence" där många av de stora internetradiostationerna stoppade sina sändningar. (MTV Online, Yahoo, di.fm, live365.com m.fl.)
Men det hjälpte säkert inte :l

Själv tycker jag det vore väldigt synd om stationerna var tvugna att sluta sända, jag lyssnar säkert på "amerikansksänd" nätradio 30h i veckan.

Angående att sända från andra länder så skriver t.ex di.fm såhär:

We do not want to consider moving to another country. First, there are legal precedents where it is established that as long as we serve listeners in the USA, regardless of where from, we are liable for that audience. As the business model relies heavily on affordable bandwidth in the USA, there is no realistic nice way of going around operating at least some of the infrastructure in the USA. Besides we just don't want to and should not have to do this in our own country.

Läste följande, då det idag är sagt att de flesta stationer kommer att stänga ner. Hoppet lever fortfarande alltså...

July 15th - Here's the Royalty Situation Update
July 15th is here, and many of you of course are wondering what is going on. After all, after today the royalty increases were going into effect making our company owe millions of dollars (so absurd!) to SoundExchange.

While we were not going to just plain shut down without a fight and/or a court order instructing us to do so, it seems we are not at that step just yet. SoundExchange announced that so far while parties are "negotiating" they will not seek to collect on the new rate formula, so webcasters should continue to stream in the meantime.

It is very important to note that this is so far just temporary, and if you've read headlines such as "Internet Radio is Saved" they were plain wrong. In fact I personally was emailing some outlets so they could change their headline (and they did). We can be back at the disaster level in a few days, weeks, or months unless something is done.

Also it is very important to note that this came as a direct result of the pressure that you the listeners have applied on Congress, and in turn on SoundExchange and the RIAA. They just simply couldn't start collecting just yet, the outcry was too big.

At the moment Congress is trying to get all parties to agree on some kind of settlement so that they don't have to pass a law such as the Internet Equality Act. While I hate it personally when the government has to get involved in business regulations myself, the truth in this case is that the process was already broken by the said government with the way they mandated the rates should be set. So we're trying to get the government to fix what the government helped to make absurd in the first place.

A settlement or some kind of an extension of what we had in years past would enable us to somehow muddle through a little longer without paying crazy rates. However I fear any settlement will only go as far as 2010. That means the survival of our company will once again be a huge question mark. More bills will be spent on lawyers, more time wasted lobbying or fighting this crap as opposed to improving our service. And less companies interested in working with Internet Radio in the long term as every 5 years the same thing happens all over again. Imagine if Starbucks couldn't rely on a relatively stable coffee price. Imagine if Starbucks had a very real chance of coffee going up by 300-500% in cost every 5 years, who'd invest in it? Do you think they might go into vacuum cleaners instead? You get the point. A negotiated settlement will ONLY shift the problem by two years, and will not solve anything. Congress, listen up, I hope you do some arm twisting to require provisions for reasonable extension terms, or net radio is screwed.

In the meantime, the good news is that the music keeps on streaming! Thanks so much for all your support so far, it is certainly helping!

Nej, last.fm är ett London baserat företag. (var iaf. vet inte hur det ser ut efter CBS köpte dom huvudsaken är att de inte sänder från usa utan från uk. :D

Precix. Det är alltså bara amerikanska radiostationer som drabbas - till en början. Vi apar ju efter USA i det mesta, därför kommer jag inte att bli förvånad när samma grej häner här i Europa/Sverige. Pessimist - javisst! ;)
