ASUS lägger ned AMD 760baserade moderkort

Nix - Asus har absolut inga planer på att göra något sådant och har inte sagt något om stabiliteten på A7M266. Det är inte Asus som har påstått det, utan TC Computers. Varför skulle de sluta sälja det mesta stabila 760-moderkortet?

A big thanks to Farsight for telling us on the messageboard about an e-mail he got:

Dear Customer, Due to instabilities inherent in the AMD 760 chipset, Asus has decided to discontinue the A7M266 motherboard, rather than ship an immature motherboard. Asus will be releasing a new motherboard, the A7A266, which will incorporate the ALI MAGiK-1 chipset, and offer support for both SDRAM and DDR memory. The expected lead-time for shipment of this motherboard is 4 to 6 weeks.
We reported a while ago that MSI and other manufacturers prefer to wait for the VIAKT266 chipset instead of promoting the AMD760 chipset boards. The latter is very sensitive to noise and needs a special layout and expensive components to work flawlessly at 266 MHz (133 MHz DDR).

If this message is correct, the last manufacturer that had a 266 MHz AMD760 board, ASUS, has discontinued the board. A real shame because it overclocked very well, and did not seem to experience any problems.

(Warning, I am speculating now :). It is possible that the board has not been canceled because it was not stable. The real reason could be the fact that the AMD760 chipset did not enjoy a good reputation with all the recent AMD760-motherboard problems.

I wonder if the delays of the AMD760 MP (from Q4 2000-Q1 2001 to Q3 2001) chipset are not related to the "sensitivity"of the AMD760 chipset.

It seems that the ASUS A7M266 motherboard has not been discontinued, rather production has been temporarily haulted due to shortages of the AMD 760 chipset. Here's more from LostCircuits about the issue:

1. like any IC, there are inconsistencies in the production of the AMD 760 North Bridge. These inconsistencies, however, are well within the tolerances acceptable by the specifications and do not affect either reliability or performance of the chipset in general. "The AMD 760 is the most stable DDR chipset currently available"

2. The production of the A7M266 is still "temporarily" being cancelled.

3. The immediate reason for the cancellation is the lack of supply of large quantities of the chipset which prevents ASUS to produce the A7M266 in volume profitable enough to warrant continuation of the board. This does not mean that the AMD chipset is not available at all, it only means that ASUS as the world's largest mainboard supplier needs more than what is available.

4. The A7M266 is still available in quantities and will continue shipping over the next weeks.

5. There are no technical issues with either the chipset or board and ASUS will continue to support the A7M266 even after production phases out.

6. Another reason to discontinue the A7M266 is the more aggressive pricing of the ALi MAGiK1 chipset in conjunction with the fact that the chipset also supports SDRAM and running the memory bus in 4/3 FSB mode.

7. The A7A266 based on the ALiMAGiK1 chipset as successor of the A7M266 is more attractive from a cost standpoint and because of the flexibility of the platform, especially the SDRAM and DDR support.

Enligt mig verkar det som om det inte är en sajt som ligger bakom det här fast det är ju inte officiellt än förstås så INGEN vet ...

Alla förseningar är ju ett tecken på att det varit en del problem med chipet ..
